Oklahoma Weather Radio Awareness Day

Send Us Comments about the
New Weather Radio Voice

The NWS office in Norman has implemented new voices for NWS weather radio broadcasts. The new voices can be heard on all 10 NWS weather radio stations that broadcast from the Norman weather forecast office.

If you have comments or want to inform us of any mispronunciations made by the new weather radio voices, please use our email form to do so or contact us at 405-360-5928 on Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 am and 5 pm Central Time.

National Weather Service Weather Radio (NWR) is a service provided by all NWS offices, free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Routine programming includes the latest weather conditions, weather summaries for the vicinity and surrounding areas, short term forecasts of significant weather expected within the next 1-3 hours, and forecasts of temperatures and precipitation out to 5 days. One of the most important reasons to own a weather radio is the ability to receive up-to-the-minute information on severe weather, such as severe thunderstorms, large hail, strong and damaging winds, tornadoes, and flash floods. Many weather radio receivers are equipped with a tone alert which will be activated the moment severe weather threatens your immediate area.

Weather Radio is the fastest and most reliable means of receiving life-threatening weather information!

NWR is a computerized voice broadcast system that automatically translates most written National Weather Service forecasts and statements into synthesized-voice recordings, and broadcast them on Weather Radio.

CRS Console
NWS Norman, Oklahoma Hydrometeorological Technician Forrest Mitchell monitors Weather Radio broadcasts.

Programming your weather radio
for your specific county

The National Weather Service has implemented technology called the Specific Area Message Encoder (SAME). This means that if you have a weather radio that can interpret the SAME information, you can program your radio to alert you if a watch or warning is issued for your specific county. SAME weather radios are programmed using FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) codes that are assigned to each county in the United States. If you live in the NWS Norman warning area, you can access the FIPS codes you need to program your radio by clicking on a transmitter on the list above, or through this list of FIPS codes for the area.

What about in other parts of the country?

Weather Radio is available in most areas of the country. You can take your Weather Radio with you when on vacation or a business trip to get current weather forecasts for that area. There is a list of NWR stations across the country . National FIPS codes can also be obtained by calling 1-888-NWR-SAME (1-888-697-7263) or via the web at : http://www.itl.nist.gov/fipspubs/co-codes/states.htm , or at http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/indexnw.htm.
