Phase II Rule
for Cooling Water Intakes Published (July 9, 2004)
Published in the Federal Register on July 9th, this final rule protects
fish, shellfish and other aquatic life from cooling water intake structures
at large power plants. This is the first time in the 32-year history
of the Clean Water Act that EPA has established a systematic way to
address the environmental consequences of power plants that withdraw
more than 50 million gallons of water per day. The rule will protect
aquatic organisms from being trapped on intake screens or drawn through
the cooling systems.

-
New
pathogen standards for beach monitoring (July 2, 2004)
EPA is acting to ensure that more protective health-based water-quality
monitoring standards are in place for all states and territories bordering
Great Lakes or ocean waters. The proposed rule sets thresholds for
the presence of organisms that indicate contamination in recreational
waters.

Aquatic Animal Production
Industry - Effluent Guideline - Final Rule (July 1, 2004)
This rule establishes effluent limitation guidelines and new source
performance standards for specific types of commercial and non-commercial
operations that produce aquatic animals for food, recreation and restoration
of wild populations, pet trade, and other commercial products.

Request
for Applications: "Nutrient Criteria Development" (May
2004) (PDF, 361KB)
EPA is accepting applications for grant awards from May 10th until
midnight June 24, 2004. We intend that these funds, available under
the Clean Water Act, will stimulate a wide range of organizations
and individuals to conduct research that will enhance state and tribal
understanding of relationships among nutrient causal and response
variables. We also hope these funds will help develop ecoregional
numeric nutrient criteria and standards by waterbody type (e.g., streams,
rivers, lakes and reservoirs) for States and Tribes to use in their
water quality protection programs. Agencies and organizations selected
for funding will be knowledgeable in the areas of water quality data
analyses and data management, particularly in regard to nutrient and
algal relationships, in addition to demonstrating a strong ability
to leverage resources.
