About the Beach Survey

The National Health Survey of Beaches (Beach Survey) has been conducted since 1997 to learn about the status of state beach programs. The voluntary survey compiled information on beach water quality monitoring, beach advisories and closings, pollution sources, and state and local beach program contacts.

When Congress passed the Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health (BEACH) Act in 2000, it required coastal and Great Lakes states and territories to annually report beach monitoring and notification data on their coastal recreation waters to EPA.

EPA still conducts the Survey for a number of inland beaches, and we intend to conduct this survey each year. As new information becomes available, it will be added to EPA’s Internet site BEACON - Beach Advisory and Closing Online Notification system. Under the BEACH Program, we will continue to work with state and local agencies to expand coverage of the survey to include more fresh water beaches.

You can view the historical survey summaries below, or use BEACON to view the latest beach information.
