Pollution
Prevention Program
The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 states that "pollution should
be prevented or reduced at the source whenever feasible." EPA promotes
pollution prevention as an essential part of its mission to "protect
human health and the environment." Click on the links below to learn
more about EPA's pollution prevention goals, overall strategy, and current

- EPA's Environmental Perfomance Reports. These
reports describe EPA's progress in reducing our environmental footprint
by better managing our energy, water, emissions, fuels, chemicals, waste,
and environmental management systems.
- Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Agency Reports.
These reports describe how EPA is meeting its obligations to purchase
environmentally preferable products under the Resource Conservation
and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Executive Order 13101. The most recent report
available is the FY 2002 report.
- EPA's Executive Order (E.O.) 13101 Goals.
This list describes EPA's E.O. 13101 goals for 2005 and 2010. These
goals were accepted and approved by the Assistant Administrator for
the Office of Administration and Resources Management in November 2002.
- EPA Headquarter's Solid Waste
Assessment (1997). This formal assessment of EPA headquarters' recycling
program discusses the types and amounts of waste generated, the capture
rate for recycling, and potential waste reduction options.
- Pollution Prevention Strategy (1994). A
report detailing EPA's strategy for reducing the manufacture, use, and
release of toxic chemicals and the Agency's adoption of pollution prevention
strategies designed to improve environmental quality in and around EPA
facilities. This 1994 report also describes EPA's pollution prevention
goals for its own facilities and the Agency's efforts to promote pollution
prevention to public and private sector stakeholders.
