Course
Description:
This course is intended to provide hands-on training in the computation of suspended-sediment discharge records, although computation of discharge of other constituents also will be addressed. The analysis of suspended-sediment data collected on a daily, periodic, and intermittent basis will be discussed. Information will be presented on application of cross-section coefficients, use of sediment transport curves, and use of turbidity as an analog of sediment concentration.
Participants will be taught the principles underlying load calculations and will compute loads using computer programs such as GCLAS, ESTIMATOR, and LOADEST2. Methods for computing other components of the total sediment discharge, such as bedload discharge and bed-material discharge will be introduced. Participants will work with instructor provided data sets, however, they also may bring questions and sediment-computation problems from the home office. Calculators are required for some classroom work. At the end of the course attendees should have a reasonable understanding of the issues, procedures, and mechanics of working and publishing a daily sediment record. Attendees should also be familiar with the computer programs, GCLAS, ESTIMATOR and LOADEST2 and understand the conditions under which each of the programs can be used.
COURSE REGISTRATION DEADLINE DATE IS SEPTEMBER 24, 2004. USGS employees please use the online TMS to register at the following URL:
