Course Description:
This 1-week course combines lectures and class problems in the study of basic open channel flow. Specifically, subject matter includes forces on submerged objects, similitude, velocity profiles, resistance, the momentum principles, roughness coefficients energy losses, backwater computation, and flow through culverts, flow over dams, and flow through weirs. Prior to the course, participants will be sent a math refresher and a video lecture of the conservation of energy concept to review before the class start date. Post-course testing will be used in this course to evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction. Test scores will only be available to instructors. Basic Hydraulic Principles
Attendees:
The hydrologist or hydrologic technician whose work involves application of hydraulics. Course participation is limited to 24 students. Cooperators & OFAs may attend on a space available basis.
Course Discipline:
Surface-Water Hydrology Courses
Prerequisites:
All attendees must have a working knowledge of algebra and some background in basic physics. The following prerequisite course system will be utilized by the Office of Surface Water. Participants for the SW2009TC Surface-Water Hydraulic Analyses course must have attended the course SW1004TC Basic Hydraulic Principles or have completed the equivalent in college level courses in hydraulics or fluid mechanics.
