Course Description:
This training course is intended to provide instruction in basic sediment data-collection techniques with principles emphasis on basic fluvial-sediment concepts, sampler characteristics, and field techniques for sampling using suspended-sediment, bed material, and bedload samplers. "Hands-on" field experience is provided using a variety of samplers and techniques. Students also will receive an introduction to laboratory analyses of sediment samples, computation of sediment discharge records, sedimentation surveys, selected methods for estimating sediment properties from surrogate technologies such as turbidty, and quality-assurance procedures other sediment-related subjects. Use of a prototype of the LISST-SL, an isokinetic laser scattering device developed throgh collaboration between Sequoia Scientific, Inc. and the USGS, will be field-demonstrated. Pocket calculators are required for some classroom work. Notebooks and extensive handouts will be provided. THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE DATE IS JANUARY 14, 2005. Attendees:
Personnel who are actively engaged in sediment or water-quality data collection activities or who plan to become involved these activities before the next presentation of the course may attend. Also, anyone who is or will be actively involved in the collection of data for a Surface-Water Toxic Waste or NAWQA project should consider attending.
