Water Quality of San Francisco Bay
A Long-term Program of the U.S. Geological Survey
San Francisco Bay is the geographic landmark of a region that is home to nearly 10 million people. We value the Bay for its aesthetic enhancement of the region, its moderation of our climate, the recreational opportunities it provides, and its place as habitat for diverse communities of plants and animals. The rapid population growth in California has changed the San Francisco Bay ecosystem. Since 1968, the U.S. Geological Survey has sustained a research program to understand how coastal ecosystems function and how those functions are altered by human disturbances. One component of this program is directed towards following and understanding changes in the water quality of San Francisco Bay.
