This Arabidopsis plant, grown under short-day conditions (eight hours of light/sixteen hours of dark), shows how many leaves are produced during the vegetative phase of the plant's approximately five-week life cycle. After the transition from the vegetative to reproductive phase, the plant produces flowers.
