Organophosphate Pesticide Tolerance Reassessment and Reregistration

EPA is reviewing the allowable limits (tolerances) for pesticide residues in food. By August 2006, EPA must complete the review of all tolerances that were in effect in August 1996 when the Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 was passed.

Organophosphates are a group of closely related pesticides that affect functioning of the nervous system. They are in the first priority group of pesticides to be reviewed under the Food Quality Protection Act.  Read "Organophosphate Pesticides in Food: A Primer on Reassessment of Residue Limits" for background information on organophosphate pesticides.

There are many opportunities for public involvement, particularly through commenting on draft documents EPA develops during review of tolerances and in making reregistration eligibility decisions. This Web site provides access to information on each organophosphate pesticide, including all documents available to the public through the Office of Pesticide Programs public docket, information on the status of the reviews, and information on when and how members of the public can submit comments. In addition, there are links to related pesticide web sites, such as the Assessing Cumulative Risk and the Committee to Advise on Reassessment and Transition (CARAT) sites.
