The NICHD conducts and supports a variety of clinical research related to Down syndrome. Select a link below to learn more about these projects.

Featured NICHD Clinical Trials

  • Multicenter Vitamin E Trial in Aging Persons with Down Syndrome
The goal of this study is to determine the safety and efficacy of the administration of vitamin E in slowing the rate of cognitive/functional decline in older persons with Down syndrome. Vitamin E is being used in this study because it has been shown to delay the progression of Alzheimer disease. Researchers want to examine if it can also help people with Down syndrome.
  • Down Syndrome Metabolic Health Study
The purpose of this study is to determine which measures best capture cardiovascular disease risk and type 2 diabetes risk in children and adolescents with Down syndrome. The researchers hypothesize that Down syndrome is associated with worse cardiometabolic risk factors for a given body mass index compared with controls.
  • Treatment Trial of Subclinical Hypothyroidism in Down Syndrome
The purpose of this study is to learn about the effects of treating subclinical hypothyroidism with thyroid hormone replacement in children and adolescents with Down syndrome. The researchers hypothesize that treatment with thyroid hormone replacement will improve cardiometabolic health and quality of life.
