Web beacons and cookies

A web beacon is an often-transparent graphic image that is placed on a site and can enable analytic tracking of a user visiting the site.  The type of information we collect includes the Internet Protocol address of the computer that retrieved the web beacon, the time the web beacon was viewed and for how long, the type of browser that retrieved the web beacon, and the referring page.  We use our own and some third-party web beacons to gather anonymous user activity for statistical and analytical purposes.

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's hard drive containing information useful for the user's web interactions with a specific web server.  We do not use cookies to store personal data.  The bookstore and special access features of our site require that the user's browser accept a cookie that contains a unique, random number used to maintain a logon session or provide a personalized experience.
