Economic Impact Payment Information Center — Topic H: Social Security, Railroad Retirement and Department of Veteran Affairs benefit recipients

This Topic is about the first Economic Impact Payment.

A1. Recipients of Social Security, SSI, Department of Veterans Affairs and Railroad Retirement benefits who already used the Non-Filers tool to provide information on qualifying children do not need to take any action.

The IRS is automatically issuing the qualifying child payments. If you received your original Economic Impact Payment by direct deposit you will receive this payment as direct deposit to the same account. Otherwise you will receive a check in the mail.

You can use Get My Payment to check the status of your payment. Another Notice 1444 will be sent in the mail stating that the additional $500 EIP per qualifying child was issued. Keep this notice with your 2020 tax records.

A2. While most eligible individuals automatically received their Economic Impact Payment,  we may not have enough information to issue a payment to other benefit recipients.

You can check Get My Payment application for the status of your Payment.

Note: The Get My Payment application will show "Payment Status Not Available" until the payment is being issued. This response does not mean you are not eligible or will not receive a Payment.

If you do not receive a payment this year, you may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 tax return.

A4. Most Social Security and Railroad Retirement recipients who receive a Form SSA-1099 or RRB-1099 have already been issued their Economic Impact Payment. You can check the Get My Payment application for the status of your Payment.

Most Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Veteran benefit recipients were issued their Economic Impact Payments earlier this year. They can check the Get My Payment application for the status of their Payment.

Note: The Get My Payment application will show “Payment Status Not Available” until the payment is being issued. This response does not mean you are not eligible or will not receive a Payment.

If you used the Non-Filers tool, however, your Payment will generally be issued within two weeks from the date when you used the tool.

A5. If you did not file a tax return or use the Non-Filer tool to claim a spouse or any qualifying children, your Economic Impact Payment will be $1,200.

If you filed a tax return or used the Non-Filer tool to claim a spouse or qualifying children, your Economic Impact Payment will be based on the return filed or the information you entered in the Non-Filer tool.

A6. If you filed a 2019 or 2018 tax return: Your Payment was or will be sent to the bank account provided on your tax return for a direct deposit of your tax refund, or mailed to the address we have on file if a tax refund was mailed or there was no refund on your tax return. If you did not file a 2019 or 2018 tax return:

  • An Individual Representative Payee should be receiving EIPs to the same direct deposit account or Direct Express card as the recipient’s monthly benefit payment.
  • For an Organizational Representative Payee, the payee may receive the EIP electronically or by mail.
