AMIDEAST

The Cultural and Exchange Office

Cultural Activities

The Cultural Affairs Office hosts American experts to Tunisia to conduct seminars, workshops, cultural and academic exchanges and lectures. Our programs cover a wide range of interests including economics, international relations, democracy building, American studies, environment, law, commerce, and the arts. We also organize American fine arts exhibits and public performances by American artists, musicians, and theater groups.

Educational Exchange Programs

The Public Affairs Section administers a variety of educational exchange programs focused on topics of bilateral interest, usually in cooperation with appropriate Tunisian institutions. Such educational exchange programs include the International Visitor Program , the Fulbright Program and the Humphrey Program .

The International Visitor Program  brings participants from around the world to the United Sates each year to meet and confer with their professional counterparts and to experience the culture and diversity of the United States. More than 186 current and former Heads of State have participated in the International Visitor Program. Programs generally last about three weeks and may be conducted in English or Arabic.

The flagship international educational program sponsored by the United States Government, the Fulbright Programis designed to "increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries..." With this goal, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 250,000 participants — chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study and teach in each other's countries, exchange ideas, and develop joint solutions to address shared concerns. In support of this program, U.S. Embassy Tunis annually sponsors a number of American students and professors who work and live here in Tunisia, usually in conjunction with a local Tunisian university. The Embassy also sends a large number of Tunisian academics each year to participate in research and teaching exchanges in the United States.

Founded in 1978 in honor of the late Senator and Vice-president, the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program brings accomplished mid-level professionals from designated countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Eurasia to the United States for a year of study and professional experience. The program encourages a variety of U.S. and foreign partnerships worldwide. Fellowships are awarded competitively to candidates with a commitment to public service in both the public and private sectors, specifically in the fields of natural resources and environmental management, public policy analysis and administration, law and human rights, finance and banking, economic development, agricultural development/economics, human resource management, urban and regional planning, public health policy and management, technology policy and management, educational planning, communications/journalism, and drug abuse epidemiology, education, treatment and prevention.

Cultural and exchange inquiries should be directed to the Cultural Assistants or the Cultural Affairs Officer in the Public Affairs Section.
