DoD R&D Information Map

This map will describe the flow of information to, through and from the DoD R&D community. It will include information repositories, information creators, information consumers, information flow, deficits and interrelationships. This map will provide DTIC® with a three dimensional graphic representation or landscape of the information necessary for the DoD R&D community to perform their functions through the research, development test and evaluation (RDT&E) cycle. The map will be constructed from data collected in interviews with DoD R&D staff such as scientists, engineers, managers, etc. The initial phase of data gathering will focus on the Navy.. Lessons Learned will be applied in obtaining data from the other services and OSD to complete the landscape. DTIC will be able to respond more effectively and efficiently to its customers and potential customers as a result of this information map. Additionally, the information map may serve as a catalyst for the development of new products and services as well as for the enhancement of existing products and service.

Workflow Automation

Workflow systems automate the flow of documents, information, and tasks from one person to another conforming to pre-defined procedures and rules. Workflow automation typically automates previously manual processes, resulting in improved efficiency and productivity in accomplishing day-to-day tasks. The workflow automation study will provide a framework for evaluating workflow products by comparing leading workflow automation software.

Biometrics

DTIC is investigating the potential of using biometrics to enable single sign-on for desktops on the DTIC network. A biometric-based single sign-on capability would allow DTIC employees to sign-on to their desktops and numerous accounts without needing to maintain a large collection of IDs and passwords. Biometrics shows great promise in eliminating this security vulnerability and increasing staff productivity.

Wireless

DTIC is watching emerging wireless technology and its possible applications for the dissemination of Scientific and Technical Information.

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

DTIC has completed an internal study on PDAs and their potential applications both within DTIC and throughout DoD. PDAs are spreading rapidly, both in the civilian community and throughout DoD, however there are a number of issues which must be addressed such as costs, security, and actual benefits. We will continue to watch the PDA market and the future potential for providing Scientific and Technical Information via these and other mobile formats.
