The Centro Cultural Nicaragüense Norteamericano
(CCNN) is a legally chartered non-profit Nicaraguan institution whose
mission is to promote cultural exchange and understanding between
Nicaraguan and North American people. The CCNN was originally founded in
1942. However, in 1972 it was destroyed by the earthquake which devastated
the city of Managua. In 1991 a group of North American and Nicaraguan
citizens began planning the re-opening of the Nicaraguan-North American
Binational Center in order to strengthen cultural ties between the two
countries. In October 1993 the CCNN reopened its doors to once again serve
the Nicaraguan and North American public.
COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE COURSES (ENGLISH
AND SPANISH)The CCNN has 18 air-conditioned classrooms for its
regular English courses. These are offered at all levels: Beginners,
Intermediate and Advanced, with a duration of 70 hours, 2 hours daily
(from 7:00 - 9:00 a.m., 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. and 6:15 - 8:15 p.m.). Saturday
and Sunday classes are available (8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.) with a duration
of 12 weeks. Children's English classes are available for ages 8 - 12 on
Saturdays.
There is also a children's summer camp offered
during vacation in January and February. Spanish for Foreigners. The
CCNN offers Spanish classes for foreigners in all levels.
Private Contracts for English language training are
also part of the center's services.
EMILY DICKINSON LIBRARY The Emily Dickinson Library specializes in
socio-economic and cultural topics. Currently the library contains 1,500
circulating and reference volumes and subscribes to 45 magazines. It also
has maps and tourist information available about the United States. Its
database on CD-ROM offers access to telephone numbers, books in print,
magazine articles in their entirety and information about American foreign
policy. A special collection of English teaching resource materials is
available to English teachers for reference.
EDUCATIONAL ADVISORY OFFICE A free advisory service
is offered to those interested in pursuing a college/university degree in
the United States. Information is also available about scholarships
offered by the U.S. governments as well as by some private universities,
as well as tests such as TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, etc.
CULTURAL PROGRAMS The CCNN sponsors musical,
literary and artistic cultural events by both American and Nicaraguan artists.
The CCNN is open to anyone interested in learning English and/or about
North American Culture.
CONFERENCE ROOM The CCNN has a large
conference room available for seminars, workshops and social events.
