SAMHSA/CSAP developed an online version of the Spanish-language communication materials called Hablemos en Confianza to help parents talk to their children about the dangers of substance abuse. The materials provide step-by-step tips on listening to, observing, and talking with children in a way that increases effective communication and decreases barriers to communication.

In this section you will learn about:

  1. Reading up on alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug issues facing youth (Getting Informed)
  2. Establishing clear rules and helping your child handle peer pressure (Peer Pressure)
  3. Helping your child feel good about himself/herself (Self-Esteem)
  4. Listening, observing, and talking with your child (Communication)
  5. Learning what type of parenting style you use (Parenting Quiz)

These materials are a wonderful resource for parents, counselors, educators, service providers, and community leaders. The hardcopy of Hablemos en Confianza includes a double-sided poster with one side encouraging families to listen and learn from each other, and the other side offering important facts about the most commonly abused drugs. Also included are three photo novellas that show how three families handled alcohol use and abuse in their family.

If you would like a hardcopy of this free, Spanish-language publication, you can order on-line or call 1-877-767-8432. (These materials were translated into English for the Web, but hardcopies are available only in Spanish).
