McCreary County’s problems with hazardous fuels began with the ice storms and winter snows of 1998 and 1999. The county's Firewise Council was formed to reduce fuel hazards, provide information about local wildland fire potential, defensible space and wildland fire prevention, and improve relationships among federal, state and county agencies and the public.

The Florida Division of Forestry needed educational materials to help Florida homeowners understand how and why interface homes burn and how to assess neighborhood vulnerability. With $10,000 in National Fire Plan funding, the Division produced 20,000 copies of a Wildfire Hazard Assessment Guide for homeowners.
