Aircraft, Information and Research
- How do I schedule an appointment to
do some research?
See the Research information page.
- How can I get permission to view the
interior of an aircraft?
Access to aircraft interiors is not permitted. The Museum has
the responsiblity to preserve the aircraft for a very long time
so aircraft cockpit/interior access is restricted to minimize
damage. Many aircraft cockpits have been photographed and large
format prints are displayed in front of the aircraft.
- Are there any aircraft cockpits or
interiors open?
Yes, many of the Presidential aircraft are open for interior
walk throughs (VC-54, VC-118, VC-121, VC-137). The C-124 cargo
bay is open. The F-104C and YA-10 (airpark) are open for look
in's. There are two displays available for sit-in: F-16 cockpit
mock-up and F-4 cockpit mock-up.
- I'm a scale modeler and I need three
view drawings, detail photos, paint schemes, etc.
Due to the overwhelming demand for this type of information
and the very limited number of staff members. The Museum can't
support modeler requests. However, the web site will gradually
add detail & cockpit photos to aircraft display pages.
- Do you have service records, unit
histories, USAF accident reports or Missing Air Crew Reports
(MACR)?
No, military service records are kept at the National
Archives. Unit Histories are kept at the Air
Force Historical Research Center, USAF accident reports
are kept at the USAF Safety office, and MACR's are kept in various
locations including the National Archives and Air Force Historical
Research Center. See the library
section FAQ on the Air Force Homepage (AirForceLINK) for
more historical research offices.

Web Site
- Can I add a link on my site to the
Museum site?
Yes, provided it isn't inside a frame.
- Can you add a link to my site?
In almost all cases no. There are two reasons for this policy.
First, there are many aviation related portal sites which do
a good job of consolidating links, much better than we could.
Second, Air Force rules restrict the types of sites we can link
to. In general, we only link to large government aviation, space
and museum sites.
- Why isn't ___________ historical event/aircraft
covered on the web site?
The web site history pages are intended as a broad introduction
to Air Force history. They are not complete or comprehensive.
The aircraft galleries cover planes actually on display (or
in storage) at the Museum. The archives virtual galleries attempt
to cover every aircraft used by the Air Force, but will take
many more years to complete. There is no attempt to cover
naval or civilian aviation on the site.
- Is every aircraft listed in an aircraft
gallery on the web site on public display?
Probably not. The USAF Museum moves aircraft on
and off public display for a variety of reasons. Although most
aircraft and missiles represented in the aircraft galleries
are on public display, some have been removed and placed in
storage. For example, most of the missiles formerly displayed
outside have been placed in protective storage until completion
of the Hall of Missiles addition is completed in late 2003 or
early 2004.
- Can I copy/use information from the
Museum web site?
Please read the USAF Museum web
site security, privacy and use statement.
