NOAA-USLA National Rip Current Awareness Campaign
NOAA's National Weather Service, National Sea Grant College Program, North Carolina Sea Grant and the United States Lifesaving Association held a National Media Event on May 24, 2004 at Wrightsville Beach, NC. The press event highlighted dangers of rip currents. The event included the release of a Public Service Announcement, new signage, brochures, statistics and a full service Website.
The press conference marked the start of 2004 National Beach Safety Week and the start of the traditional summer vacation season. Media targets included coastal communities, chambers of commerce, local beach patrols and public safety committees, national news media, including morning news shows. The press conference was followed by a national media tour from the site.
