HyperFAQ Frequently-Asked Questions

Why do seemingly-disconnected topics get thrown together?

The web sites provided by the HyperFAQ are organized by responses to questions. Often, different users with different goals will answer the same set of questions in the same way.

How is the HyperFAQ created?

The HyperFAQ (http://www.va.gov/hyperfaq) is updated monthly based on the pages that represent most of the hits to www.va.gov. The HyperFAQ webmaster receives a report from VA Web Operations Staff of the top 250 web pages for each calendar month. The webmaster takes each report for the previous six months and builds a list of every URL that made the top 200 requested pages for any of the previous six months.

The webmaster then checks each URL to make sure that it is still valid. The webmaster corrects any URLS that have been replaced with new addresses, and deleted URLs for content that has been deleted and cannot be found. The webmaster then reviews all of the web pages on the report and creates a simple yes-no question that, if answered, divides the number of URLs relevant to a "yes" or "no" response into two stacks with as close to an even balance of URLs in both of the stacks as possible. On the occasion that a URL is relevant to both a "yes" and "no" response, the webmaster duplicates that URL and assigns it to both stacks.

The webmaster continues creating yes/no questions and stacks of URLs until each stack is brief enough to index on a single web page. The webmaster then creates the web pages that ask the questions that were used to divide the URLs into stacks, and the index pages of URLs for every possible combination of questions.
