National Earthquake Hazard Reduction
Program (NEHRP) Maps, 1997, 2000
The National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) maps
were prepared by the USGS and are based on the recommendations
of the Building Seismic Safety Council's (BSSC) Seismic Design
Procedures Group (SDPG). The SDPG-recommended maps, the Maximum
Considered Earthquake (MCE) Ground Motion Maps, are based on the
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) probabilistic hazard maps with additional
modifications incorporating deterministic ground motions in selected
areas and the application of engineering judgement. Development
of the probabilistic ground motion maps for the United States are
described in a Spectra paper by Frankel, et al (2000). Development
of the MCE ground motion maps, including the differences from the
probabilistic maps, are described in a Spectra paper by
Leyendecker, et al (2000).
The complete NEHRP map set consists of Maps 1 - 24 (the
MCE ground motion maps) listed below and Maps 25 - 32 (10% in
50 years probabilistic ground motion maps) also listed below.
Maps 1 - 24 are used with the 1997 NEHRP Recommended Provisions
for Seismic Regulations for New Buildings (BSSC, 1998a
and 1998b). The complete map set, Maps 1 - 32, are
used with 1997 NEHRP Guidelines for the Seismic Rehabilitation
of Buildings (Applied Technology Council, 1997a and
1997b).
