Aviation Weather
Programs/Projects
(Tier 3/4 Baseline Update)

FCM-R21-2003

Aviation Weather Programs/Projects (Tier 3/4 Baseline Update) - the original Tier 3/4 Report published in April 2001, contained eighty-nine aviation weather-related programs/projects from various organizations. At the time, this represented the extent of our knowledge with respect to work being done in support of the National Aviation Weather Initiatives published a couple years earlier. Over the next couple of years more and more aviation weather-related work came to our attention through continued coordination with the federal agencies as well as with private organizations. The updated report now contains over one hundred forty programs/projects and represents a fairly complete inventory of work being done in the aviation community to reduce accidents and delays where weather is a contributing factor. Along with the program/project descriptions, the report contains a mapping of the various aviation weather activities against the National Aviation Weather Initiatives. This was also done in the 2001 report and is included to show how the work is supporting the initiatives. Accident statistics are showing that fatal accident rates involving weather are declining and it is believed that the R&D efforts as well as the other work highlighted in this updated report are contributing to this decrease.
