Introduction

This section provides Afloat Safety  Officers with the knowledge and insight they need to prepare their ship’s crew for a scheduled availability. Due to the dynamic nature of an availability, this section can not provide information to cover all possible hazard scenarios. However, it will provide the Afloat Safety Officer with the basic tools needed to anticipate and handle hazard scenarios as they arise and to provide the Afloat Safety Officer with an avenue to ask questions and to provide lessons learned.

Repair availabilities, from extended overhauls to intermediate maintenance availabilities, are among the most dangerous evolutions on a ship’s schedule. During fiscal year 1995 until the conclusion of fiscal year 1999, 43% (70/164) of all afloat class A and B mishaps occurred during an upkeep availability or overhaul.

As the Naval Safety Center develops it's Safety in Availability Program, we will revise and add to this web site. Afloat Safety Officers are encouraged to refer to this web site often, as it will be updated on a continual basis. Afloat Safety Officers are also encouraged to provide their comments, insights, and lessons learned that can only be acquired by managing an afloat safety program during an availability. Information provided by Afloat Safety Officers will be posted on this web site to benefit other Afloat Safety Officers who are beginning their availability period.
