Denver Celebrates Red Ribbon Week The Red Ribbon Campaign is a very special event for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). It is a time we honor the memory of Special Agent Enrique Camarena who died for his country and his beliefs. Special Agent Camarena served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps and joined DEA in 1974. Special Agent Camarena believed he could make a difference and keep drugs off the streets of America. Because of Special Agent Camarena's dedication to his job and country, Mexican drug traffickers kidnapped, tortured, and killed him in February 1985. Each October thousands of schools, communities and state and local drug abuse prevention organizations distribute red ribbons to honor Special Agent Camarena. The millions of Americans who wear these ribbons demonstrate visibly their commitment to a drug-free life and their belief they can make a difference. As part of the Red Ribbon Campaign, the Colorado National Guard and the Rocky Mountain Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration have combined efforts to reach out to thousands of youth and young adults with the Red Ribbon Fly-In to schools across Colorado. During the Red Ribbon Fly-In, students witness a Colorado National Guard Helicopter arrive at their school, receive a valuable presentation on the importance of being drug-free, receive red ribbons, and red ribbon awards. The message provided during the Red Ribbon Fly-In is unique and memorable for the youth and young adults in Colorado.
