DCB - Cancer Etiology Branch (CEB)

The Cancer Etiology Branch plans, develops and directs a national extramural research program dealing with biological, chemical and physical agents that are possible etiological factors or co-factors in cancer and with the control of these agents and their associated diseases. Specific agents of interest include infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria and chemical carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and hormones. Investigations include studies of the agents themselves and their properties, mechanisms of oncogenesis and carcinogenesis, interactions of oncogenic microbiological agents with their hosts, and basic studies to identify possible targets for preventive or therapeutic measures.

DNA Virus Studies
Large and small DNA tumor viruses, their mechanisms of transformation and their interactions with their hosts are areas of major emphasis.

RNA Virus Studies
Oncogenic human and animal retroviruses, their oncogenes and etiologic mechanisms, and human and animal hepatitis viruses are studied.

AIDS Virus Studies
Investigations of HIV and related viruses as etiologic agents of AIDS-associated cancers are areas of major interest.

Carcinogenic Agents
Identification of chemical carcinogens, tumor initiators and promoters, and their metabolism, toxicity, and physiologic distribution are studied.

Carcinogenic Mechanisms
Toxicity, mechanisms of action of carcinogenic chemicals and their activation and deactivation pathways, and biochemical and molecular markers of chemical carcinogenesis are investigated.

Hormonal Carcinogenesis
Investigations of the mechanisms involved in endogenous and exogenous hormone-related cancer are supported.

Special Activities
Supports a variety of studies of the mechanisms of bacterial species and chemical and physical agents in the etiology of human cancer.

Research Resources
Supports the synthesis and distribution of chemical carcinogens, mutagens and their metabolites as well as radiochemicals and experimental tumor inhibitors to chemical carcinogenesis investigators.
