Peace Corps Goals
In 38 years, the Peace Corps has gone through many cycles: it has been as large as 15,000 Volunteers and as small as 6,000 Volunteers, but the focus of the Volunteers has never wavered from its original three goals, as enshrined in the Peace Corps Act signed by Congress in September, 1961:
(1) To help the people of interested countries meet their needs for trained workers;
(2) To help promote a better understanding of Americans in countries where Volunteers serve; and
(3) To help promote a better understanding of people of other nations on the part of Americans.
