Selected Current Aerospace Notices (SCAN)

Introduction
Selected Current Aerospace Notices (SCAN) is a weekly electronic current awareness journal that announces recently issued report and journal literature from the NASA scientific and technical information knowledge base. SCAN covers the full spectrum of aeronautics and aerospace-related information and segments it into subject groupings, or topics, which are narrower in scope than the 76 categories provided by Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR). Furthermore, SCAN announces documents simultaneously in all relevant topics. Document citations announced in STAR are presented in only the one subject category deemed most appropiate.

Each of the 186 SCAN topics is carefully tailored to fit the needs of a specialized research activity. New topics are added as the need arises, and others are retired or redefined as research demands dictate.

SCAN Access Methods
Updated weekly, SCAN is a free announcement service listing the latest aerospace-related scientific and technical information from around the world that has been entered into the NASA scientific and technical information knowledge base. Each issue is divided into 186 topics, each one carefully tailored to fit specialized research needs in subjects like Earth resources and remote sensing, behavioral sciences, optics, and mechanical engineering. Readers can quickly skim or find documents of interest to their research needs.

With over a thousand announcements of new reports, books, conference proceedings, journal articles, and more in each issue, SCAN is a product you can't afford to miss. Start your free access to SCAN today.

Accessing Electronic SCAN
Electronic SCAN is free with access through email listserv (U.S. only), or online via the NASA Scientific and Technical Information (STI) website at http://www.sti.nasa.gov, under the Tools/Products/Services heading.

Information on ordering documents and searching the current issue of SCAN is included. Each major SCAN topic includes a description of the subject area coverage.

Listserv
SCAN subscriptions via the Listserv option are available only to users located in the United States.

Subscription Instructions

All subscription requests must be sent in "PLAIN TEXT" message format.
If not, you will receive an error message and will not be subscribed until you receive a successful “You have been subscribed…” response.

Microsoft Outlook (version 2000) users:
In the toolbar, click “Format,” then “Plain Text” before sending the message. (Please contact your mail administrator for additional help.)

The following shows a sample of available list names and what you will receive in the email message each week.

Main topics such as 01, 02, etc., provide you with materials from any subtopics under that number such as 02-01, 02-02, 02-03, without having to subscribe to each one; however, you are not subscribing to those individual topics, only the main topic. (This is important to know if you decide to unsubscribe to any lists.)

To subscribe to individual subtopics, you must subscribe to each one either in separate requests or in a multiple list request, as described further below.

List Name What You Receive
scan-notify Notification that a new SCAN issue is available online
scan-all-topics All SCAN topics
scan-lifesciences SCAN topics 51-55
scan-01 SCAN topic 01 Aeronautics (General)
scan-02 SCAN topic 02 Aerodynamics
scan-02-01 SCAN topic 02-01 Aerodynamic Characteristics
scan-02-02 SCAN topic 02-02 Aerodynamics of Bodies
scan-02-03 SCAN topic 02-03 Airfoil and Wing Aerodynamics

To view all the available SCAN topics, go the SCAN Topic Areas or send mail to: listserv@sti.nasa.gov, leaving the subject line blank and typing only the word “lists” (without the quotes) in the body of the message.

To Subscribe:

  • Send e-mail to listserv@sti.nasa.gov
  • Leave the subject line BLANK
  • In the body of the message, type: sub (name of list) (your name)

  • (do not type the parentheses, e.g., sub SCAN-NOTIFY John Q. Public)
  • Make sure message format is plain text
  • Send

You may subscribe to multiple lists with one request. Place each subscription command on a separate line as follows (no parentheses):

sub (name of list 1) (Your Name)
sub (name of list 2) (Your Name)
sub (name of list 3) (Your Name)

You will receive a confirmation message via e-mail from the listserv upon a successful subscription attempt.

Please keep your confirmation message. You will need to know the exact name of the list and email address from which you subscribed if you decide to unsubscribe.

To Unsubscribe:

You must send the unsubscribe request from the same email address used when you subscribed to the list. You must use the exact spelling of the list name (e.g., SCAN-NOTIFY). Do not include your name in the request.

  • Send e-mail to listserv@sti.nasa.gov
  • Leave the subject line BLANK
  • In the body of the message, type: unsub (name of list)
(do not type the parentheses, and do not include your name, e.g., unsub SCAN-NOTIFY)
  • Make sure message format is plain text
  • Send
You may unsubscribe to multiple lists with one request. Place each command on a separate line as follows (no parentheses):

unsub (name of list 1)
unsub (name of list 2)
unsub (name of list 3)

Note: If you receive materials from multiple subtopics in a main group such as SCAN-02-01, SCAN-02-02, and SCAN-02-03, be sure that you are actually subscribed to those particular topics before unsubscribing. You may actually be subscribed to the main topic SCAN-02, which provides those subtopic results without having to subscribe to each one. Check your original subscription confirmation message to identify exactly the list to which you are subscribed.
