The Office of the Chief Information Officer oversees the development and formulation of the Information Technology Strategic Plan, Information Technology Operational Plan, Information Technology investments and overall Information Technology budget for the National Weather Service.
- Telecommunication Operations Center

The Telecommunication Operations Center maintains, operates, and develops enhancements to the National Weather Service Telecommunication Gateway (NWSTG), supports the major NCEP Products for distribution connectivity, initiates communication acquisitions, and manages Gateway telecommunication networks and facilities to meet the mission of the NWS in national and international communication connectivity areas.
The operation of the NWSTG includes:
- Central performance monitoring,
- Data exchange activities,
- FTP and Web based central data and information services,
- AWIPS Network Control Facilities operations, and
- Systems management
- The Center develops telecommunication and dissemination systems and associated software which includes:
- Gateway Local Area Networks design and development,
- System operations,
- Server services,
- Major data switching services,
- Communication service acquisition,
- Gateway Systems and LAN security,
- Systems configuration change management, and
- Data flow management of major centralized automated dissemination systems
- Telecommunications Management

The Office of the CIO has oversight over all telecommunications systems, both operational and non-operational, managed by the National Weather Service. In addition, the CIO is responsible for the development of high-level telecommunications plans and policy.
