2000 ANNOUNCEMENTS
NODC has announced the selection of Janice Beattie for the position of Director, NOAA Central Library. Janice joined the library staff in 1989, as Chief of the Regional Libraries Branch. Prior to coming to NOAA, she was the Head of Reference Services for the Navy Department Library.
Janice holds B.S. and M.L.S. degrees. She is also a member of the IOC's Group of Experts on Marine Information Management, and serves on the board for the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts.
NODC's Ocean Climate Laboratory has announced that the world ocean has warmed significantly over the past 40 years. Sydney Levitus, who heads the Ocean Climate Laboratory in Silver Spring, MD, reported the findings in
the March 24, 2000 issue of Science magazine in an article named "Warming of the World Ocean". Media interest was extremely high about the published results. Articles appeared in newspapers throughout the country including the NY
Times, Washington Post, and San Francisco Chronicle among others. Syd Levitus appeared on the CBS News, CNN World News, National Public Radio, as well as many other radio stations. The Associated Press distributed both a radio interview
with Levitus and a press story based on an interview with Levitus. Read the

The NOAA Central Library received Federal Library of the Year Award: Thursday, March 30 Librarian of Congress Dr. James Billington presented the Federal Library of the Year Award to the NOAA Central Library. This award is granted by the Federal Library/Information Center Committee, established by the Library of Congress over thirty years ago. NESDIS Deputy Assistant Administrator for Environmental Information Services, Mary Glackin, accepted the award. NODC Deputy Director Kurt Schnebele, Acting Library Director Janice Beattie, and Branch Chief Doria Grimes also attended. The Library is recognized for energetic, creative leadership in enhancing Library collections and services; supporting NOAA's multi-dimensional environmental assessment, prediction, and stewardship mission; fostering a high level of professional competency in the field of information services; and developing innovative, high quality products and customer services. Andrew Allegra has his picture taken with Deputy Under Secretary Scott Gudes, NESDIS Administrator Greg Withee, and NOAA CFC Coordinator Susan Kennedy during the NOAA CFC Awards Meeting in February 2000. NESDIS received the Chairmans Award for collecting over $90,500 and having a 72% participation rate. Awards for the 1999 CFC Campaign
Andrew Allegra was the NESDIS CFC Coordinator for 1999. As
a whole, NESDIS collected over $90,500 with a 72% participation rate (highest
ever). NODC received a 100% money-goal award, and Andrew received a letter from Deputy Under-Secretary Scott Gudes for his efforts.
