NOAA SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ROOM DEDICATED - October 2002 A collection of rare books and documents from NOAA and its predecessor organizations was dedicated on Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the NOAA Central Library in Silver Spring, Md. (The NOAA Library is operated by the National Oceanographic Data Center) James R. Mahoney, Ph.D., assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere, was the keynote speaker at the dedication of the Charles Fitzhugh Talman Special Collections Room. More details NODC Website Gets a New Look - September 2002 A Common Web Identity and a new navigation scheme were implemented, as well as a review (and rewrite) of all NODC Web content. The Website was also checked for compliance with all DOC Web Policies and Section 508 Accessibility laws, and a usability study was performed. The new design will allow users to more easily navigate the entire suite of NODC products and data services. US DOC Gold Medal Winners - September 2002 The NODC Ocean Climate Laboratory (OCL) Team is honored for scientific/engineering achievement in the field of ocean data management and analysis. They have created and distributed World Ocean Database 1998 (WOD98) and World Ocean Atlas 1998 (WOA98). WOD98 is the world's most comprehensive, ocean profile-plankton database. WOA98 is a set of analyzed fields of the data contained in WOD98. Creation of these products has led to the discovery that the world ocean has warmed during 1955-96. This observed warming is consistent with the warming predicted by climate models forced by the observed atmospheric increase in Greenhouse Gases during the past 100 years. The creation of WOD98 and WOA98 have made a major contribution to the solution of a long-standing scientific problem of the greatest international importance. The World Ocean Atlas 2001 and Database 2001 are now available.] All OCL Products NODC employees play major role in NOAA-wide project - September 2002 NOAA's Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS) is designed to be a single point of access to NOAA coral reef information and data products, especially those derived from NOAA's Coral Reef Initiative Program. CoRIS will evolve and grow in the months ahead to encompass an ever widening array of product and information offerings. - Read the NOAA press release National Coastal Data Development Center Opens - April 2002 On April 8, the newest division of NODC, the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC) opened to the public. NCDDC is physically located in Stennis Space Center, Mississippi and the Director is Joseph Stinus. NCDDC hosted representatives from Federal and State Coastal activities to review the operational capability for three of our eight programs (Coastal Risk Atlas, Harmful Algal Blooms Observing System, and Integrated Sustained Ocean Observing System support). Each capability is online and provides for web enabled coastal data searches, access, and geospatial display. Check out NCDDC at www.ncddc.noaa.gov and let them know how they can serve your coastal data needs.
