Site Info: Fernald [Fernald Closure Project]
With an annual budget exceeding $300 million, the Fernald facility holds the title of largest single-site cleanup facility within the Ohio Field Office complex. Located 18 miles northwest of Cincinnati, Ohio, production ended in 1989 at the former uranium metal production facility - a key component in the nation's defense program. Fluor Fernald manages site cleanup activities as primary contractor.
The project includes five operable units based on their locations or the potential for similar technologies to be used in their remediation. The former production area occupies 136 acres. Stakeholder involvement ensures a united effort between the community and the DOE and it's contractors. All key cleanup decisions for the Fernald site are made with full public participation from federal and state regulators and the public.
