USDA Pilot School Project
Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Program
The 2002 Farm Bill authorized $6 million to 25 schools in each of 4 states—Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio-and the Zuni Indian reservation in New Mexico, to make free fresh and dried fruits and fresh vegetables available to students as snacks in schools.
This one-year pilot program will help students achieve their recommended 5 to 9 daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The intent of the program is to determine the feasibility of offering students free produce and to measure student's willingness to participate.
To help participating schools succeed, NCI has put together a resource guide for educators that includes fruit and vegetable curricula and classroom materials, and marketing materials for food service personnel. Click here to view the Fruit and Vegetable Pilot Resource Guide.
