General Crimes Unit

The General Crimes Unit operates within the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Missouri.

Attorneys in the General Crimes Unit (GCU) prosecute a broad range of federal offenses, including public corruption; violent crimes such as bank robbery, kidnaping, and carjacking; economic crimes such as health care fraud, bank fraud, bankruptcy fraud, government fraud, tax fraud, credit card fraud, fraudulent checks, identity theft, investment fraud, and other frauds against businesses; criminal civil rights violations; anti-terrorism cases; and various other types of federal offenses, including arson, certain firearm offenses, environmental crimes, child support crimes, criminal copyright violations, counterfeiting violations, customs violations, and immigration violations. The General Crimes Unit also handles civil and criminal asset forfeiture cases. GCU works with virtually every federal investigative agency to carry out its mission in the office.

Public corruption cases
Investigation and prosecution of federal, state or local officials who violate the public trust.

Violent crimes
Investigation and prosecution of bank robberies, kidnapings across state lines, carjackings affecting interstate commerce

Economic crimes
Investigation and prosecution of a broad range of federal economic crimes, including:

  • health care fraud cases involving fraudulent billing by health care providers
  • bank fraud cases including embezzlement and misuse of funds by bank officers and employees and bank customers defrauding banks
  • bankruptcy fraud cases involving submission of fraudulent documents in bankruptcy court and concealing assets from the bankruptcy court
  • government fraud cases involving fraud in various federal programs, including Social Security, Housing and Urban Development, Small Business Administration
  • tax fraud cases involving false income tax returns and failure to file tax returns
  • credit card fraud cases involving fraudulent obtaining, manufacturing and use of credit cards
  • fraudulent check cases involving interstate passing of fraudulent checks
  • identity theft cases involving use of fraudulent identification information
  • investment fraud cases, usually involving mail fraud or interstate wire fraud
  • other frauds against businesses or individuals

Civil rights violations
Investigation and prosecution of federal civil rights violations, including allegations of police misconduct and discrimination in housing

Anti-Terrorism cases
Investigation and prosecution of anti-terrorism cases, including leading the Anti-Terrorism Task Force

Various other federal offenses
Investigation and prosecution of a variety of federal offenses, including:

  • arson cases including arson for profit cases and arson of commercial buildings used in interstate commerce
  • firearm offenses involving prohibited weapons such as pipe bombs and machine guns and improper sales of firearms
  • environmental crimes, including participation in an Environmental Crimes Working Group of federal, state and local agencies
  • certain child support cases referred by state agencies
  • criminal copyright violations
  • counterfeiting currency violations
  • customs violations
  • immigration violations
