USDA has worked with the research community through the Food Security Measurement Project to develop a rigorous measure of household food security. This methodology empowers local communities to assess their own food security through the Guide described above. It has also been incorporated into the national nutrition monitoring system, providing a rich data source for analyzing changes in the level and distribution of food security in the United States. Household Food Security in the United States, 2002 The latest in a series of annual statistical reports on the prevalence of food security, food insecurity, and hunger in U.S. households, based on the December 2002 Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement. This report, in addition to statistics on food security, includes information on how much U.S. households spend on food and the extent to which food-insecure households participated in Federal and community food assistance programs. Prevalence of Food Insecurity and Hunger, by State, 1996-1998, prepared by the Economic Research Service, provides State-level data on food insecurity and hunger in the United States. Household Food Security in the United States, 1995-1997: Technical Issues and Statistical Report: This report examines the stability and robustness of USDA's food security measure over time and across demographic groups.
