The built environment – the developments where we live, work,
shop, and play – has both direct and indirect effects on the
natural environment. Where and how development takes place can directly
impact unspoiled areas and disturb animal habitats when natural cover
is replaced with impervious surfaces such as concrete or asphalt.
EPA has a variety of programs and resources that can help states and
communities realize the economic and environmental benefits of smart
growth. EPA’s community-based efforts feature problem solving
and growth planning, such as preservation of open space and farmland,
for communities with environmental concerns. These programs can help
designers, city planners, and communities make important development
decisions to help communities pursue ecologically compatible development.
