Gifted & Talented Program

High School Work Study Program
 

Whether you're gifted in Math and Science, or strong in office technology, NSA provides on-the-job training specific to your skill set.

 GIFTED AND TALENTED PROGRAM 

If math and science are your strong points, NSA's Gifted and Talented Program may be perfect for you.

Application Deadline
Applications must be received by November 1st of your junior year.

About the Program
The Gifted and Talented Program is designed for high school students who have demonstrated an aptitude for Math and Science. If you are accepted into the program, you will be required to work 32 hours per week during the summer months following your junior and senior years. A mentor will be assigned to work with you on projects related to your areas of interest and aptitude.

When hired, you will be placed on a Temporary Appointment, with a conclusion date at the end of August. This temporary, part-time employment category requires a Monday-Friday duty schedule.

Training
You'll enhance and broaden your skills in the areas of Computer Science and Engineering.

Salary
You will earn a wage consistent with a GGD-01 job classification during the first summer, and a GGD-02 the second summer.

Benefits
You will earn sick and annual leave in proportion to time actually worked. Time will be accrued at a rate of one hour leave per 20 hours worked. You will also be paid full Social Security taxes.

Job Placement After Graduation
NSA cannot guarantee permanent full- or part-time employment after completing the program. However, college-bound students who have performed well in the program and intend to major in a skill acceptable for the Stokes Scholarship Program or Cooperative Education programs will be encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

  • Must reside in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., metro area
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have an interest and aptitude in math and science
  • Must be a high school junior
  • Must have completed Physics, Calculus, Computer Programming, or an Engineering course by the end of your junior year
  • Must have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher in coursework in the area of study
  • Must be 16 years old by May 31st of your junior year
  • Must have reliable transportation for getting to and from work

Making the grade

  • You must meet the standards of performance on the job
  • You must complete the end of tour work report
  • You must maintain passing grades in all course work
  • You must achieve satisfactory evaluations from your supervisor/mentor
  • Employment may be terminated if your personal conduct warrants such action

How to apply
Contact your county board of education. To participate in the Gifted and Talented Program, students must submit a complete application packet that includes:

  1. Resume - you must apply online and send an additional copy with your application.
  2. Two teacher recommendations
  3. An official transcript and a copy of first quarter report card
