Education

The FPD Program is concerned with future public professionals who will be responsible for freight transportation and planning. The FPD Program will engage the academic community in an effort to integrate freight into the traditional transportation planning courses and academic programs.

Although there are currently numerous quality transportation degree programs available, initial assessments indicate the following characteristics in terms of freight specific offerings:

  • Logistics programs are primarily geared toward private sector.
  • Planning programs are overwhelmingly focused on passenger demand modeling.
  • Public administration programs do not explicitly address administration of transportation policy and / or programs.
  • Technical training on how to use analytical tools and methods crucial to freight planning and analysis are often overlooked in the existing programs.
