The lumber and wood products sector covers logging, sawing, planing, milling and the manufacture of such products as: wood containers, veneer, plywood, particle board, oriented strand board, structural members, engineered wood and preserved/treated wood. The Department of Commerce formerly classified the lumber and wood products industry under the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 24; the sector is now classified under the 1997 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) as code 321 .

The pulp and paper sector manufactures pulp (mostly from wood), and then use the pulp to manufacture a range of products including paper, paperboard, envelopes and corrugated containers. The Department of Commerce formerly classified the pulp and paper industry under the 1987 Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 26; the sector is now classified under the 1997 North American Industry Classification System Exit EPA disclaimer (NAICS) as code 322.
