Lake Observation Program

Lake wind sites established!

--

In partnership with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Whitecaps Windsurfing, and Columbia County Georgia, the National Weather Service has completed installation of a weather monitoring system at the J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir Dam.

On Lake Murray,  the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and NWS have completed installation of a weather monitoring system on Flotilla Island.

A text version of lake reports containing wind speed and direction and air temperature is also available.

Weather conditions will be available 24 hours a day from the NWS website. In addition, wind and temperature information will be transmitted on NOAA  Weather Radio from the NWS Office in Columbia SC.

Weather sensors at J.Strom Thurmond Dam measure wind speed and direction, temperature, and rainfall

A new service in the wind for area boaters!

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Columbia is interested in installing weather monitoring units at Lake Wateree and Lake Marion. These weather monitoring units will provide :

  • Wind Direction and Speed

  • Air Temperature

  • Rainfall amounts

Boaters and fishermen can help us by recommending possible locations for these weather monitoring units. The sites must have power and telephone service nearby, and to ensure most accurate wind information, be in a open area (no large buildings or trees blocking the wind system).

E-mail us with your recommendation for sites!

Weather Partners Needed

To relay the information from each of the weather monitoring units to NOAA Weather Radio and our web page, we are seeking interested non-profit organizations to participate as a weather partner. The organizations will be responsible for providing electrical power (units require 120 volts for sensor power and a data modem. Power consumption of both units is minimal), a telephone line (since the data will be accessed frequently during the hour a separate phone line will be required) or an "always on" Internet connection, and a secure location for the sensors.

If you would be interested in sponsoring a weather monitoring site, e-mail us at CAEWX@noaa.gov.
