Your Browser Up arrow

It is highly recommended that you obtain the most recent version of your preferred browser (Mosaic and Netscape Navigator will give the very best results). The default options of your browser should work fine for exploring this site. For better readability, you may want to turn link-underlining off (see the "Anchors" or "Styles" options of your browser's preferences). Adjusting your browser's window to fit exactly around the rectangle below will give you a good line-length for paragraphs.

Navigating the Publication Up arrow

Women, Minorities, and Persons With Disabilities in Science and Engineering is structured so you can navigate around the chapters non-linearly. You can reach prologue sections and the first part of each chapter from the main Table of Contents. Furthermore, every chapter has its own table of contents, usually appearing after the chapter's introductory text.

These buttons will appear in one form or another at the bottom of every page. The first one takes you to the Table of Contents page, the next to the help document you are now reading, the third will take you to the Abbreviations page for help with acronyms, and the fourth will show you the home page of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The left-pointing arrow will take you to the page immediately before the one you are viewing.

Up arrowRight arrow

The small, upwards pointing arrow will take you back to the top of your current page of text. The other small arrow, pointing to the right, is found only in the Highlights section. Appearing at the ends of paragraphs, this arrow will take you to sections of the document relevant to the subject of the corresponding paragraph.

Special note on navigation

Occasionally you will encounter a page without a link to the page you were previously viewing. In this case, use the back arrow button ( ), found in your browser's toolbar, to return to that page. This will occur in places like the chapter Figure and Text Table pages, as well as references to other parts of the publication from the Highlights section.

Viewing the Appendix Tables Up arrow

Appendix B contains statistical tables in spreadsheet format (the one exception is Appendix Table 1-1, which is in HTML). These are not available for direct viewing, but they can be downloaded. All links in the publication that refer to appendix tables point to these files, and you must configure your browser to open these files with the correct application. Enter the following information into your browser's preferences (under the "Helper Apps" or "Viewers" section) for the files to be automatically opened with a spreadsheet application:

MIME Type: application/x-excel (File Type: application, Subtype: x-excel)
Extension: wk3
Action: Launch application (you will need to show your browser where the spreadsheet application is on your machine)

This will assure that all files with the extension "wk3" will be downloaded to your machine and opened with the spreadsheet application you specify. You may also save the file directly to a disk and view it with the spreadsheet program of your choice that will read *.wk3 files (e.g., Lotus 123 or Microsoft Excel).
If you still need assistance, please refer to more detailed documentation on configuring your browser to download spreadsheet files.

Charts and Text Tables Up arrow

Most other links within the publication point to chart figures and text tables. Since these areas are referenced by more than one page, you will need to utilize the back arrow button in your browser's toolbar to return to your previous screen. Please note that since several of the charts and tables are wider than most screens will allow, you may need to either resize your browser window or use the scroll bars of your window to view the documents.

Other Resources Up arrow

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology maintains a metalist of resources on the Internet related to women and minorities in science and engineering. You can link to the Division of Science Resources Studies (SRS) publications page, where more on-line publications from SRS can be found.
