Notice of Opportunity to Improve Performance (also known as Performance Improvement Period - PIP): After discussion with the employee (periodic performance review), if the employee's performance still does not improve, you must inform him/her of the critical element(s) in which performance is unacceptable, in what way it is unacceptable, and exactly what is required to bring it up to the "Fully Successful" level. Servicing Personnel Offices will assist supervisors in developing an acceptable Performance Improvement Plan.  The employee must be provided a reasonable opportunity period to demonstrate acceptable performance. The time needed to demonstrate acceptable performance is a judgement made by you based on such considerations as:
  • The employee's position

  • The extent of the performance problem

  • The nature of the problem

The normal rule is 60-90 days.
