Bush Sends Condolences Upon Death of U.A.E.'s Sheikh Zayed

Commends the late president for his state-building efforts

President Bush has extended his condolences upon the death of United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan.

In a November 4 statement, Bush praised Sheikh Zayed and his fellow rulers for their efforts to build the U.A.E. into "a prosperous, tolerant, and well-governed state."

Sheikh Zayed, who was also the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, has been president of the U.A.E. since the seven emirates forged their federation in 1971. (more)

I was saddened to learn of the passing today of Sheikh Zayed, President and Founder of the United Arab Emirates, whose vision and leadership united seven independent emirates into one nation.

Sheikh Zayed was a friend. He stood both at home and abroad as a symbol of benevolent and wise leadership characterized by generosity, tolerance, and avid pursuit of development and modernization. We will miss Sheikh Zayed's friendship and send our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and the people of the United Arab Emirates. (more)


Public Announcement
UAE President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan passed away November 2, 2004. The Government of the United Arab Emirates has announced a 40-day period of official mourning and closure of UAE Government offices and institutions from Wednesday, November 3 through Wednesday November 10. Government offices will also close from November 13 through November 17 in observance of the Islamic holiday of Eid al Fitr. During these periods of government closure, American citizens considering travel to the United Arab Emirates cannot expect to do business with UAE government offices or officials. (more)


Diversity Visa Lottery Registration Begins November 5
State Department plans to issue 50,000 visas under annual program The U.S. Department of State is launching the 2006 Diversity Visa Lottery with assurances of its capability to meet demand and warnings about the risks of fraud in the process. The Diversity Visa Lottery is a program in which the United States awards 50,000 permanent resident visas annually to individuals applying from countries that historically have low levels of immigration to this country. (more)

Sheikh Zayed was a visionary leader who was genuinely loved by his countrymen and deeply respected by the government of the United States and the American people, in particular those who have lived and worked in the UAE. Sheikh Zayed achieved prosperity for his people and promoted peace and tolerance in the region.
