In January 2003, Representative Tom Allen became the first Maine Member of Congress since 1975 to serve on the House Committee on Energy & Commerce. The information and links on this page are provided to give the latest updates on the Committee’s work.
House Democrats chose Tom for this prestigious committee, which, along with Appropriations and Ways & Means, is one of the three most powerful and influential committees in the U.S. House of Representatives, because of his record of achievement since he entered Congress in 1997. “Democrats and Republicans alike recognize Tom Allen’s leadership in the House on health care, prescription drugs, environmental protection, and other critical issues under the jurisdiction of the Energy & Commerce Committee,” House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said at the time of his selection.
Tom serves on the Committee’s Subcommittee on Energy & Clean Air, Subcommittee on Environment & Hazardous Materials and Subcommittee on Oversight & Investigations.
The Committee on Energy & Commerce has principal responsibility for House oversight of food and drug safety, public health, air quality and environmental health, telecommunications, consumer protection, the supply and delivery of energy, and interstate and foreign commerce. The Committee’s jurisdiction extends over five Cabinet-level departments and seven independent agencies including the Departments of Energy, Health and Human Services and Transportation, the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Communications Commission. Established in 1795, it is the oldest legislative standing committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.
“I welcome this tremendous opportunity to accomplish more for Maine and shape national policy on health care, prescription drugs, the environment and other issues important to Maine families and businesses,” Tom said when he learned of this new Committee assignment. “The Committee on Energy & Commerce is the real center of activity in the House on the bills I’ve championed during my first three terms in Congress. I look forward to working with Republicans and Democrats on the Committee to make affordable health care coverage available to small business owners and their employees, oversee the pricing, advertising and other business practices of the pharmaceutical industry, close the loophole that lets power plants in the Midwest and South pollute Maine’s air and tackle many other critical issues.”
