CAPT Robert D. Wilson, Jr., USN

CAPT Robert D. Wilson, Jr. was born in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from California State University, Fresno and received his commission from Aviation Officer Candidate School, Pensacola, Florida in 1981 and designated a Naval Flight Officer in April 1982.

In July of 1982, CAPT Wilson reported to his first operational assignment flying the ERA-3B “Skywarrior” with the “Firebirds” of Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron THREE THREE (VAQ 33). While assigned to the “Firebirds,” he made numerous detachments while conducting operational and electronic warfare missions in support of fleet operations for Second and Third Fleet air and surface units. His next assignment was with Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE (VQ-1), NAS Agana, Guam flying in the EA-3B “Skywarrior.” During his tour, he made multiple deployments in USS ENTERPRISE (CV-65), USS KITTY HAWK (CV-63) and USS MIDWAY (CV-41) to the Indian Ocean, South China Sea and Mediterranean Sea. CAPT Wilson next reported to Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force, Norfolk, Virgina in October 1988. In July of 1991, CAPT Wilson transitioned to the ES-3A “Shadow” and reported to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron FIVE (VQ-5), NAS Agana, Guam in March of 1992. He served as the Training Officer, Operations Officer and Detachment ALFA Officer-in-Charge, where he led the first operational deployment of the ES-3A to the Persian Gulf in November 1993 embarked in the USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62). CAPT Wilson’s next assignment was with the Program Executive Officer Air, ASW, Assault and Special Mission Program Office (PMA-290), Arlington, Virginia in April of 1994. During this tour, he served as Deputy Program Manager for the ES-3A.

In April 1996, CAPT Wilson reported to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron SIX (VQ-6) as Executive Officer and in June 1997 became the Commanding Officer. CAPT Wilson then reported to the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Ft. McNair, D.C. in July of 1998 where he received a Master of Science Degree in Strategic Resource Strategy and in July 1999 reported to the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Virginia for his Joint tour. In May 2002 CAPT Wilson reported to COMUSNAVCENT/FIFTH FLEET located in Bahrain where he was the Assistant Chief of Staff for Communications (N6) during OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM and in October 2003 CAPT Wilson became the Commanding Officer of Naval Station Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico where he led the Congressionally mandated closure of the naval station. CAPT Wilson has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (one gold star), and the Navy Achievement Medal.
