Dietary Guidelines for Americans
are the cornerstone of Federal nutrition policy and nutrition education activities. They are issued jointly by USDA and DHHS and updated every 5 years.

The Food Guide Pyramid
a widely recognized nutrition education tool, translates nutritional recommendations into the kinds and amounts of food to eat each day.

The Food Guide Pyramid for Young Children
is an adaptation of the original Food Guide Pyramid designed to simplify educational messages and focus on young children's food preferences and nutritional requirements.

USDA Food Plans
Thrifty, Low-Cost, Moderate Cost, and Liberal each represent a nutritious diet at a different cost. The Thrifty Food Plan is the basis for food stamp allotments.

Expenditures on Children by Families
provides estimates of the cost of raising children from birth to age 17.

Web-based Training
The ABCs of the Dietary Guidelines 2000: Science and Application is an on-line training course to help professionals understand the Dietary Guidelines 2000. It offers free continuing professional education credits.

 

USDA Healthy Eating Index
is a summary measure of overall diet quality. It provides a picture of the type and quantity of foods people eat and the degree to which diets comply with specific recommendations in the Dietary Guidelines and the Food Guide Pyramid.

The Interactive Healthy Eating Index
an online version of the Healthy Eating Index, is a useful dietary assessment tool that provides a quick measure of a person's diet quality. It includes targeted nutritional messages, a personalized Pyramid graphic, and nutrient intake information.

The Nutrient Content of the U.S. Food Supply
is a historical data series, beginning in 1909, on the amounts of nutrients per capita per day in food available for consumption. An Interactive version of this series allows users to query nutrient and Pyramid servings information on-line.

Family Economics and Nutrition Review
Begun in 1943 as a monthly newsletter and transformed in 1957 to a scientific publication, the journal reports research related to the economic and nutritional health and well-being of Americans. The journal is published twice a year.
