COMMERCIAL VEHICLE OPERATIONS LABORATORY

commercial weigh scale at NTRC
Commercial vehicle operations (CVO) work at NTRC includes research into equipment and technologies for making commercial vehicles safer and more efficient, including development of mobile platforms and educational/informational resources relating to intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

Capabilities

  • Development and testing of weigh-in-motion systems for evaluating commercial vehicles without forcing them to stop at weigh stations
  • Development, testing, and integration of ITS technologies related to CVO
  • Design and specification of mobile platforms and vehicles for unique Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and Department of Transportation applications
  • Development of interactive ITS/CVO multimedia educational programs and presentations
  • Logistical planning and vehicle tracking
  • Educational module and workshop development
  • Facilitation and training
  • CD-ROM reproduction and multimedia development
  • Web and kiosk development
  • Animation/simulation/video production

Major Equipment

  • AutoCad 2000
  • Weigh-in-motion prototype systems
  • Pit reference scale (80,000 lbs)
  • CVO routing/planning software
  • CVO loading software
  • CVO multi-vehicle tracking systems

Research facilities include a laboratory at the Knox County, Tennessee, weigh station, the second-busiest weigh station in the United States. It includes a high-speed weigh-in-motion test laboratory, data feeds from Tennessee Department of Safety facilities, and connections to the CVO home office via an ISDN line.

Current Projects

  • R&D; on the conversion of static weigh station scales into enforcement-quality weigh-in-motion systems
  • Design, specification, integration, and operation of the Federal Transit Administration's Advanced Public Transportation Systems Mobile Showcase for the transit industry (http://www.ornl.gov/ttddt/apts.htm)
  • Design and specification of the Desiccant Advanced Technology Trailer for the DOE Office of Power Technologies
  • Development of the Weigh-In-Motion Virtual Website for the Federal Highway Administration (http://www.ornl.gov/dp121)
  • Development of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Virtual Safety Truck for the heavy truck industry
