While we are recognized as the world's premiere Coast Guard we are challenged by the technological limitations of our aging Deepwater assets. Coast Guard Deepwater cutters are the 3rd oldest of the 39 similar fleets world-wide, and the demands on our service are greater than what we can provide.
To face this challenge, and the approaching end of service life of many of these platforms, the Coast Guard initiated the Integrated Deepwater System Program. The program employs an acquisition strategy that is the most innovative and aggressive in the federal government. The program has contracted the industry leaders in shipbuilding, aviation and communications to design our future system of assets.
Recently, in recognition of the challenges the Coast Guard faces in performing our critical missions, including Homeland Security, the Service has received much appreciated support from the President, the Administration, and Congress. Recent speeches by the President have strongly applauded our efforts, and the President's budget places the Deepwater Program on the right track.
