On Monday, March 1, 2004, U.S. Representative Tom Allen held a field hearing on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed mercury air pollution rule in the Legislative Council Chamber (Room 334), Maine State House, Augusta. Representative Allen is a member of the House Committee on Energy & Commerce which oversees EPA's enforcement of the Clean Air Act.
“I invited Maine citizens to speak out publicly on President Bush’s controversial rollback of regulations proposed by the Clinton Administration to reduce poisonous mercury emissions that pose a serious health risk to children and expectant mothers, endanger fish and wildlife and pollute our natural environment,” Representative Allen said. “I and other Members of Congress from New England originally requested that EPA schedule a hearing in the region on this critical public health and environmental decision. Instead, the closest official EPA hearing was held February 25th, in Philadelphia, more than 500 miles from Augusta. Monday’s hearing gave Maine people who could not attend that hearing an opportunity to be heard. Since the record for the February 25th hearing remains open, I will also submit the testimony I received on Monday to EPA for consideration and to my colleagues on the House Committee on Energy & Commerce.”
Representative Allen heard testimony from state officials, representatives of the health care, environmental, fish and wildlife and other interested communities and private citizens. The links below are to the written testimony submitted which Representative Allen will forward to EPA in the near future once he has received all of the testimony Maine people wish to offer. The record for EPA's February 25th is scheduled to remain open until April 30th.
