Increasing
Awareness of ARS Employment Opportunities |
Below are some
suggestions, in addition to those provided in other sections of this
web site, on steps you might take to increase awareness of open job
opportunities. If you have an idea that is not in this list and would
like to share it for this web site so others may use it, send it by
e-mail to the ARS Recruitment Office (cstortzum@ars.usda.gov).
- Place a
sign at the street entrance advertising that there are job opportunities
available with a phone number to call for information.
- Purchase
and use magnetic signs on Government vehicles advertising job
opportunities and directing individuals to the web site or give
a phone number to call for information.
- Buy ad space
on roadside billboards.
- Make posters
to place in grocery stores, libraries, or other places to give
visibility to the employment opportunities.
- Set up a
table at a local mall or shopping center to give out information
about employment opportunities and instructions for applying for
Federal positions.
- Set up a
display table at field day activities with information on employment
opportunities and instructions on applying for Federal positions.
- Advertise
and conduct seminars (maybe on a weekend or in the evening) on
the topic of "Finding and Applying for Federal Jobs."
The ARS Recruitment Office could develop a presentation for you
to use for such an event.
- Use direct
mail marketing via the many U.S. Postal Service contractors (the
U.S.P.S. web site has information available) to advertise employment
opportunities at a particular location.
- Use the
"Exclusive Job Alert" feature at major scientific web
sites (such as Science magazine and ScienceJobs.com) to target
particular audiences. For example, Science magazine will send
"Exclusive Job Alerts" to individuals registered to
receive such alerts that reside in their database. They can target
a particular job, a particular market area, or both. ScienceJobs.com
also has this service. Both require a fee.
- Register
with colleges and universities to use their job posting and résumé
databases. Make sure that jobs are posted on these sites and use
the résumé databases to mine for potential applicants.
When you find potential applicants, send a letter and information
packet to them.
- Encourage
scientists who are presenting seminars at scientific meetings
to end their presentation by showcasing information on career
opportunities in ARS and the web site address. Since most presentations
are done using Powerpoint or some other software program this
could be done easily.
- Send an
e-mail to all employees at a location to let them know there is
a current job opening and encourage them to share information
on the position with individuals they might know who could apply.
Attach a copy of the vacancy announcement to the e-mail message
for employee use.
- Advertise
in movie theaters, in radio ads, and with community service organizations.
